SEO and marketing for personal injury lawyers and law firms

Personal injury lawyer SEO is the work of making a firm visible when an injured person, or someone in their family, searches for a lawyer: on the map, in the ordinary results and in the paid placements above them. Personal injury is competitive. It also comes with rules most businesses never meet, because every page, ad and reply a firm publishes is a communication about a lawyer’s services.

We are a marketing agency, not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice. Advernation was started in Queens in 2007 by Christopher Maddaloni, a former electrician, and works from Manhattan. We do SEO for personal injury attorneys the way the conduct rules require it to be done: no promised outcomes, no claims a firm cannot back, and the firm’s own lawyers approving every word before it is published.

Tell us the case types you take and the counties you take them in. We will show you which firms hold those searches today and what it would take to appear beside them.

How injured people search for a lawyer

Many searches name what happened and where. The practice areas we build pages for include auto accidents, slip and falls, and wrongful death. Google’s own description of this category of lawyer adds matters such as assault and battery. Each case type is its own search with its own questions, typed by someone who has rarely hired a lawyer before.

A second group of searches are questions: whether there is a case, how long there is to file, what a lawyer costs, what to do about the insurer’s calls. A firm that answers them accurately, in plain words, under a named lawyer’s review, is found earlier than one that only publishes a list of practice areas.

The third group is your own name. A person who was given two or three firms by a friend looks each one up. What they find, the Business Profile, the reviews, the attorney pages, decides the call. This is the part of search a firm controls most, and it is easy to neglect.

The rules come first

A wide stone courthouse with columns and steps behind a lawn, under a cloudy sky

In New York the Rules of Professional Conduct on lawyer communications were amended effective June 1, 2026. Rule 7.1, as amended, states the standard plainly: a lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer’s services. A communication is false or misleading if it contains a material misrepresentation of fact or law, or leaves out a fact needed to keep the statement as a whole from being materially misleading. The same rule confirms that a lawyer may communicate information about the lawyer’s services through any media, which includes a website and a search result.

In practice that turns into fixed habits:

  • No promise of a result, stated or implied. We do not write what a client will recover or that a case will succeed.
  • No claims about the firm, and no comparisons with other firms, that the firm cannot substantiate. The State Bar’s comment to Rule 7.1 says an unsubstantiated claim or comparison may be misleading.
  • No statement that a lawyer is certified as a specialist unless the lawyer holds a certification from an approved organization and the page names it, as Rule 7.1(c) requires.
  • The name and contact information of a responsible lawyer or firm on every communication, as Rule 7.1(d) requires.
  • Nothing published until a lawyer at the firm has read and approved it.

The State Bar’s summary of the amendments says the label “Attorney Advertising” is no longer required and that the separate waiting period for soliciting accident victims was removed. Live person-to-person solicitation for gain remains prohibited under Rule 7.3, with narrow exceptions such as contact with another lawyer. Other states have their own versions of these rules. We work to the rules of the state where the firm practices, and we ask the firm to confirm our reading of them.

Local SEO for personal injury lawyers

Search for an injury lawyer and a place, and Google shows three firms on a map first. It says those are chosen mainly by relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well the firm’s Business Profile matches the search. Distance is measured from the person searching, so a firm is strongest around its office. Prominence is how well known the firm is, and Google counts reviews and links from other websites toward it. A better local ranking, Google says, cannot be requested or bought.

The profile has rules of its own. Google’s guidelines say the name must be the business’s real-world name and that adding unnecessary information to it is not permitted, so we do not add practice words or city names to a firm’s name. Categories should be few and specific. Within those rules we complete everything: the practice areas as services, the lawyers, accurate hours, photos of the real office.

For the counties beyond the office, the map is harder and the ordinary results matter more. That is the job of the website.

Reviews without breaking a rule

Google requires that reviews reflect a genuine experience and prohibits offering anything in exchange for one. It also says more reviews and positive ratings can help a local ranking. Within Google’s rules a firm can ask clients for a review with a link at the close of a matter, asking all of them the same way. Whether and how the firm asks is for its lawyers to decide.

The reply needs care. New York’s Rule 1.6 says a lawyer shall not knowingly reveal confidential information, and a reply that corrects a reviewer’s account of their case can do exactly that. We draft replies that thank the reviewer or invite a call, and say nothing about the matter. The firm approves each one. Testimonials on the website are used only with the client’s permission.

Personal injury law firm SEO on the website

The site needs one full page for each case type the firm takes. A page explains, in the words a client would use, what the firm does in that kind of matter, what the first conversation covers and what the client should bring. It carries the name of the lawyer responsible for it and links to that lawyer’s page. It makes no prediction about the reader’s case.

Attorney pages matter more for a law firm than about pages do for most businesses, because the client is hiring a person. Each one should state where the lawyer is admitted, their experience and the matters they handle, accurately and without adjectives.

Location pages are written only for places where the firm has something true to say: an office, the courts it appears in, the roads and hospitals its clients mention. A set of pages that repeat one text under different town names is what Google’s spam policies call doorway abuse, and it is also a poor look for a firm asking to be trusted.

Links come from where a firm is already known: bar associations, legal directories, law schools, community organizations it supports, and the press when its lawyers are quoted.

A small brass scale of justice standing on a white desk beside a laptop

Google runs a pay-per-lead ad program for lawyers, and personal injury law is one of its categories. The firm pays for a lead instead of a click. To take part, Google requires a state bar license check for each personal injury lawyer in the firm. The order of the ads comes from an auction that weighs the bid, the rating and number of reviews, and how reliably the firm responds, so intake has to pick up.

Search ads run under the same conduct rules as the website, since an ad is a communication about the firm’s services. We write them to the rules, send each to a page about that case type, and limit them to the counties the firm serves. Our Google Ads management covers both kinds.

How we are paid matters for a law firm. Paying for clients touches Rule 7.2, under which a lawyer shall not compensate a person to recommend or obtain employment by a client, and Rule 5.4, which bars sharing legal fees with a nonlawyer. The State Bar’s comment to Rule 7.2 separates the two cases: a lawyer may pay for advertising, and it names search engine optimization, while paying for leads is allowed only on conditions, the first being that the lead generator does not recommend the lawyer. For the work on this page we charge a set fee. We never take a share of a legal fee or a payment tied to how a case turns out.

Law firm marketing beyond SEO

Personal injury lawyer marketing is wider than rankings, and every part of it falls under the same conduct rules, because each is a communication about the firm’s services. Four parts matter besides SEO. The first is the firm’s Business Profile and its reviews, the work described on our local SEO services page. The second is the website itself: if the present one is slow, hard to read on a phone or built so that pages cannot be corrected quickly, we rebuild it under web design, with a lawyer approving the text as before. The third is paid search, covered in the section above. The fourth is how the firm appears when someone asks an AI assistant instead of typing a search, which is the subject of AI search optimization.

Social media has a smaller role for an injury firm than for a contractor. It is useful for showing that the firm is real and active in its community, and risky when it drifts into comment on cases, so anything we post through social media marketing goes through the same approval. A personal injury marketing agency should also be able to say what each part costs before work starts. Ours are on the pricing page, and the first step, the free SEO audit, costs nothing.

What we do, month by month

WhenWhat we doWhat you see
Month oneAudit of the site and profile, including a read for statements the conduct rules would not allow. Research on case-type searches in your counties and the firms ranking for them. Tracking for calls and forms into intake.Three documents: the plan, the searches to aim at, and the wording that has to be corrected.
Months two and threeCase-type pages and attorney pages drafted, sent to the firm’s lawyer, corrected and published. Profile completed. Listings in legal and local directories made consistent. Review requests set up.Approved pages live, reviews arriving, inquiries logged by case type and source.
Months four to sixAnswers to the questions clients ask, each reviewed by a lawyer. Pages for real locations. Links from bar, community and press sources. Ads, if the firm wants them.Positions moving on case-type searches, and intake numbers beside them.
Every month afterNew articles, review replies for approval, corrections when the rules or the firm change. One report: inquiries, calls, positions, traffic.

We need from the firm: access to the website, the profile and ad accounts, one lawyer who approves content promptly, the case types and counties it wants, and a monthly count of inquiries that became signed clients.

What it should cost to be worth it

A firm knows roughly how many inquiries it takes to sign one client of each case type, and what a signed case of that type is worth to it on average. Work backward from there. The year’s fees, divided by that average, is the number of additional signed cases the work must produce in a year. Count signed cases, not clicks or even calls, because that is the figure the marketing can be held to.

Monthly SEO plans for personal injury law firms start at $999 a month and are quoted after the free audit, with no contract. Get a quote.

Two things are priced already. The SEO audit costs a firm nothing, and our Google Ads plans start at $500 per cycle. We do not use contracts. The pricing page is where the other figures will appear.

What we can and cannot show

Two local rank maps for a car accident lawyer search with the city blacked out, dated Jun 25 and Sep 3, 2026, the second almost all green
Local rank grids for the search “car accident lawyer” (city hidden) on June 25 and September 3, 2026. Average rank 4.37, then 2.34. High positions 48%, then 83%. Client not named.

We show one law firm result here, with the client not named, and we will not name a firm until it agrees to it. Beyond that we show the method and the audit. We will not promise a position, since Google says no one can guarantee a first place ranking, and we will not promise cases. If an agency promises a law firm either, the firm is the one whose name is on the claim.

Questions people ask

What does personal injury lawyer marketing include?

SEO for case-type and location searches, the firm’s Google Business Profile and reviews, the website, paid search, and a careful presence on social media. All of it is a communication about the firm’s services, so all of it is written to the conduct rules and approved by a lawyer at the firm.

Is law firm marketing different from SEO?

SEO is one part of law firm marketing: the part that earns unpaid positions on the map and in the results. Marketing also covers ads, the website, reviews and how the firm appears in AI answers. Most injury firms need SEO and the Business Profile first, then ads.

What is personal injury lawyer SEO?

It is the work of ranking an injury firm in Google’s map results and ordinary results for searches by case type and place, and of making sure that what people find when they look up the firm by name is accurate and complete. It is also called personal injury attorney SEO or personal injury SEO.

How long does personal injury SEO take?

Longer than for most local businesses, because the field is competitive. Plan on three to six months before the first clear movement and a year to judge the result. Changes to the Business Profile show sooner. Nobody can promise a date or a position.

May a law firm do SEO and advertise online?

Yes. New York’s Rule 7.1 says a lawyer may communicate information regarding the lawyer’s services through any media. What it prohibits is a false or misleading communication. Other states have their own rules, and the firm should confirm them.

Can we pay you a share of fees or per signed case?

No. For the SEO and advertising work on this page we charge a set fee, and we never take a percentage of a legal fee or a payment tied to the outcome of a case. Rule 5.4 bars sharing legal fees with a nonlawyer, and Rule 7.2 restricts paying a person to recommend or obtain employment by a client.

Do we still need the Attorney Advertising label in New York?

According to the New York State Bar Association’s summary of the amendments that took effect on June 1, 2026, the label is no longer required. Rule 7.1(d) still requires the name and contact information of a responsible lawyer or firm. Check the current rules before relying on any summary, ours included.

What is local SEO for personal injury lawyers?

It is the part of the work aimed at the three firms shown on the map for a search with a place in it. It covers the Google Business Profile, listings, reviews and local links. Google ranks those results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

Who writes the content?

We draft it, in plain language, from what the firm tells us and from primary legal sources. A lawyer at the firm reviews and approves every page, ad and reply before it goes out. Nothing is published on our say alone.

Do you work with firms outside New York?

Yes, with one condition: the firm tells us which state’s rules govern its communications and confirms our reading of them. Advertising rules for lawyers differ from state to state.
