Dispensary marketing and SEO for cannabis retailers

Dispensary SEO matters more than SEO does for most shops, for a plain reason: the advertising other retailers rely on is closed to cannabis. In the United States Google does not accept ads for it, and Meta does not allow ads that promote or sell THC products. What is left is being found, on the map when someone nearby searches for a dispensary and in the results under the map. That is the work our monthly SEO plans pay for.

Advernation is a digital marketing agency in New York City, started in Queens in 2007 by Christopher Maddaloni. Dispensaries are on our three monthly SEO plans, from $999, $1,999 and $3,500 a month, and we publish one result, from a dispensary in Torrance, California. Both are set out below, after the advertising rules as Google and Meta state them.

Tell us where your dispensary is and which searches you want to be found for. We will tell you which plan fits, or that none does.

Why a dispensary cannot simply buy ads

Google’s advertising policy on dangerous products and services has a section on recreational drugs. It says ads for substances that alter mental state for the purpose of recreation, or otherwise induce highs, are not allowed. Neither are ads for products or services marketed as facilitating recreational drug use, or ads for instructional content about producing, purchasing or using recreational drugs. Google has announced a limited pilot in Canada for some legally allowed cannabis products and services. For the United States the policy we read makes no exception for a state where cannabis is legal, so a licensed dispensary here still cannot run Google Ads for its products.

Meta’s advertising standards, which govern Facebook and Instagram ads, say ads may not promote or offer the sale of THC products or cannabis products containing related psychoactive components.

Both companies leave a narrow opening for CBD and hemp, which matters to a dispensary that also sells those lines and to CBD brands:

WhereCannabis with THCCBDHemp
Google AdsNot allowedOnly topical, hemp-derived CBD products with THC of 0.3% or less. The advertiser must apply to Google, which sends retailers to LegitScript for certification, and may target only California, Colorado and Puerto Rico.No separate opening stated in the policy we read.
Meta ads (Facebook, Instagram)Ads may not promote or offer it for saleUnited States only, with active LegitScript certification and written authorization from Meta, no health or medical claims, and adults 18 or older only.Ads may promote or sell hemp products that contain no CBD and no more than 0.3% THC in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The free Google Business Profile is not an ad, but what is uploaded to it has rules too. Google says its prohibited and restricted content policies apply to the photos and videos a business publishes on its profile, and its policy for content on Maps restricts regulated goods: uploads may not feature calls to action or offers for the sale of such products, links to a page where they can be bought, or promotional offers, and should not show deals, coupons or pricing. The policy’s list of regulated goods names alcohol, tobacco, regulated pharmaceuticals and others and says it is not limited to them. It does not name cannabis. We treat a dispensary’s posts and photos as if it did, and keep deals and prices on the website.

Then come the state rules, which bind you as the licensee. California’s Department of Cannabis Control says advertising may be displayed only where at least 71.6 percent of the audience is reasonably expected to be 21 or older. New York’s Office of Cannabis Management requires an age-restriction mechanism on a licensee’s website and allows social media advertising only to accounts whose users have verified they are 21 or older. Tell us your state and license type at the start, because they decide what your website and profile may say.

How people find a dispensary

A shop window with a large cannabis leaf and the words Cannabis, licensed, on a street of storefronts

Many customers find a dispensary by searching for one near them, and Google answers with a map. It says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your Business Profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching, which is why your position changes from one block to the next. Prominence is how well known the business is, and Google says it is also based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

A dispensary cannot move, and cannot buy its way up: Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. So the work goes into the other two. The plans below are made of links from other websites, mentions in the press, consistent listings, and close tracking of where you show.

A result: three first-place points on a Torrance heat map

Two local rank maps side by side, each a grid of numbered dots over a street map, dated Feb 16 and Mar 11, 2026, under the keyword dispensary torrance, with red arrows on the second map
The two maps: February 16, 2026 on the left and March 11, 2026 on the right. The red arrows point at the three first places.

Our dispensary page has carried one result, in these words: “3 New Number 1 Listings for a Dispensary in Torrance, CA in less than a month!” Here is what stands behind it. The search was “dispensary torrance” in Google Maps, checked from a grid of points across Torrance and the neighboring towns. The first map was taken on February 16, 2026 and the second on March 11, 2026. On the second, the dispensary shows in first place at three points on the grid. On the first it showed in first place at none.

We would rather you read the result exactly. The average position across the whole grid was 3.74 on the first map and 3.73 on the second, which is to say unchanged. The gain was at three points on the western side of the grid, not everywhere. That is all the maps show, and it is not a promise about your city, your competitors or your month.

Dispensary SEO plans and prices

There are three plans, the same monthly SEO plans every business gets. They are flexible monthly plans: you can upgrade at any time, and no long-term commitment is required.

The start is the same on every plan. After you sign up we send a recommended list of target keywords based on your services and location. Once you approve it, we begin building your placements and run a benchmark ranking report, so you can track progress from day one. No contracts and no gimmicks.

What the plans contain, in plain words

A placement is a link to your dispensary from another website. In our plans the links are placed on websites within your own industry, including sites related to your competitors. Each plan states how many it includes: 30 or more, 75 or more, or 125. We make no claim about what any single link does for a ranking. The tracking described below is how you judge the plan as a whole.

Press releases

Each plan includes press releases written for brand and local authority: an opening, a new product line, a community event, a license milestone. Each one is written to put your name and your town together.

A citation is a listing of your business name, address and phone number on a directory or map service. Google’s advice is that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, so the listings are made to match your profile exactly.

Tracking and heat map reports

Every week we record where you rank on phones, on desktop and in Google’s business results for the keywords in your plan: 50, 100 or 200 of them. The heat map report shows the same thing geographically, as a grid of points around your shop reaching 5, 10 or 15 miles, each marked with your position for a search made from that spot. It is the kind of map described in the Torrance result above.

Dispensary marketing beyond SEO

Dispensary marketing is narrower than marketing for other shops, because the paid channels are closed, and that makes the channels you own carry the weight. There are four. The website is the largest: store pages, a menu that loads quickly on a phone, the age gate your state requires and plain answers for a first visit. If yours cannot do that, we rebuild it through web design. Social media is the second. Paid ads for THC products are not allowed on Facebook or Instagram, but a dispensary’s own posts are a different thing from ads, and they remain subject to the platform’s rules and your state’s; our social media marketing page describes how we work. The third is the answers AI assistants give when someone asks where to buy nearby, which draw on the same clear pages and are covered under AI search optimization. The fourth is reviews and the Business Profile, described below. A dispensary marketing agency should tell you which of the four is weakest before selling you a plan, and that is what the audit is for.

The plans cover links, press, listings and tracking. Relevance is built on your own website and profile. Give each store its own page with the address, the hours, the license number and what is sold there. Add an age gate where your state requires one, as New York does. Write plainly about what a first-time customer wants to know: what to bring, how ordering works, what the purchase limits are in your state. On the profile, keep the hours exact and the photos current.

Ask for reviews the honest way. Google requires that a review reflect a genuine experience and prohibits offering anything, a discount included, in exchange for one. A printed QR code at the counter and a reply to every review are both within the rules.

Our wider local SEO services cover the profile and the map in more detail, and the free SEO audit will grade your site as it stands.

How long it takes

The Torrance maps were taken 23 days apart, and that is the only timing we will put a number on. Google’s own guidance is that some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months. A dispensary in a town with few competitors will see movement sooner than one on a street with five. The weekly tracking and the benchmark report exist so that you can see for yourself, from the first week, whether the plan is working.

Questions people ask

What does dispensary marketing include if ads are closed?

The channels a dispensary owns: its ranking on the map and in search, its website, its Google Business Profile and reviews, and its own social posts within the platform’s and the state’s rules. Our plans cover the ranking work: links, press, listings and tracking.

What does a dispensary marketing agency cost?

Dispensaries use our three monthly SEO plans, from $999, $1,999 and $3,500 a month, with no long-term commitment. They differ in the number of placements, press releases, citations and tracked keywords, and in the radius of the heat map reports.

Can a dispensary advertise on Google?

Not its cannabis products, in the United States. Google’s ads policy does not allow ads for substances that alter mental state for recreation. The only opening is for topical, hemp-derived CBD products with 0.3% THC or less, by application, targeted to California, Colorado and Puerto Rico. A dispensary can still have a free Google Business Profile and rank in search.

Can a dispensary advertise on Facebook or Instagram?

Meta’s advertising standards say ads may not promote or offer the sale of THC products or cannabis products containing related psychoactive components. CBD ads are allowed in the United States with LegitScript certification and written authorization from Meta, and ads for hemp products with no CBD and no more than 0.3% THC in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

How much does dispensary SEO cost?

Our plans start at $999, $1,999 and $3,500 a month. They differ in the number of link placements, press releases, citations and tracked keywords, and in the radius of the heat map reports: 5, 10 or 15 miles.

Is there a contract?

No. The plans are monthly, you can upgrade at any time, and no long-term commitment is required.

What is a link partner placement?

It is a link to your dispensary’s website placed on another website. In our plans the placements are on websites within your own industry, including sites related to your competitors. The Starter plan includes 30 or more, Accelerated 75 or more and Domination 125.

What is a local heat map report?

It is a map with a grid of points around your shop. Each point shows where your dispensary ranks in Google Maps for a search made from that spot. It shows where you are strong, where you are not, and how that changes week to week.

How fast does dispensary SEO work?

In our one published result, a Torrance dispensary showed in first place at three points on its heat map 23 days after showing at none, while its average position stayed the same. We do not promise that timing. Google says some changes take effect in hours and others take several months.

Do the plans suit CBD and hemp brands?

The plans are written for dispensaries, but the same work applies to a CBD or hemp brand, which also has slightly more room to advertise under Google’s and Meta’s rules. Tell us what you sell and where, and we will say what fits.

Do you work with dispensaries outside New York?

Yes. We are in New York City and the result on this page is from California. Each state’s cannabis regulator sets its own advertising rules, so we need your state and license type before we start.
