Paving marketing and SEO for paving and concrete contractors

Paving marketing is how a paving or concrete contractor gets in front of property owners while they are still collecting quotes. Driveways, sidewalks, patios, foundations and parking lots are planned purchases. The owner searches, looks at pictures of finished work and asks two or three contractors to come and measure. SEO and Google Ads decide whether you are one of the three.

Tired of waiting for the phone to ring? Every driveway, paving and concrete contractor knows that referrals alone will not keep the schedule full. Advernation was started in Queens in 2007 by Christopher Maddaloni, a former electrician, and one of our published results is a concrete contractor’s. It is described further down.

Tell us what you pour or pave and the area you cover. We will show you which contractors are getting the quote requests there now.

How customers search for paving and concrete work

Residential searches name the surface and the material. The core of it is stamped concrete, asphalt, driveways and foundations. Add walkways, steps and patios, and you have the pages a residential contractor needs. The customer behind each search is in no hurry. They want to see your finished jobs, understand what sets the price and be sure you will come back if it cracks.

Commercial searches come from people who manage property: a parking lot that needs resurfacing, a loading area, a long run of sidewalk. They search by the job and the place, and they shortlist contractors whose sites show commercial work, insurance and the capacity to do it.

Repairs are the third group and the only urgent one: a sunken slab, a broken curb, a trip hazard somebody has complained about. Many of those begin with a letter from the city.

Sidewalk violations: a search the city creates

In New York City, property owners are responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining the sidewalk next to their property. When the Department of Transportation finds one defective it issues a sidewalk violation, which it describes as an official notice to the owner stating that the sidewalk is defective. There is no fine attached. But the owner has 75 days to make the repair, and if it is not made the city may hire a contractor and send the bill.

Every one of those notices sends an owner to Google. The contractor who gets the call has a page that explains the notice in plain words: the 75 days, the sidewalk repair permit the work needs, and the dismissal inspection to request through 311 when the work is done. If you do sidewalk work in the five boroughs, that page should exist before anything else on your site is improved. In other cities, look for the local equivalent: a code enforcement letter, a curb program, a driveway apron rule.

A short season, so the marketing starts early

Paving is tied to temperature. New York City’s transportation department explains that traditional asphalt has to be heated above 300 degrees and then moved quickly to the work site, and that it uses warm mix asphalt, which needs only 250 degrees and can be laid in cooler weather, to stretch its own paving season into the winter. A private contractor in a cold climate works inside the same limits, and customers know the work happens in the warm months.

The marketing therefore has to be finished before the ground thaws. Google says some changes to a site show within hours and others take several months. Pages for driveways and patios, the reviews that support them and the first ads should be in place in late winter, so the quote requests arrive while there is still room on the schedule.

Local SEO for paving contractors

For searches such as “paving contractor” with a town, Google shows a map with three businesses, and it says it chooses them mainly by relevance, distance and prominence. A paving contractor improves the first by listing every surface and material as a service on the Business Profile, and the third by collecting reviews and links. Nothing can be done about distance, and Google is clear that position on the map is not for sale.

Photographs matter a great deal in this trade, because the product is the finished surface. Google recommends adding photos to a profile to show customers what you offer. We post finished driveways, patios and lots through the season, each with the town named. Your yard address stays on the profile, and the towns you work in are added as service areas, up to the 20 Google allows.

One thing is different for this trade. Google’s list of categories for its pay-per-lead Local Services Ads in the United States has had no category for paving, asphalt or concrete flatwork whenever we have read it. The nearest is one for foundations. So the ads at the very top of the page that a plumber or roofer can buy are not sold under your trade’s name; check the list before you plan around them. For most paving contractors the field is the map pack, the ordinary results and standard search ads.

Licenses, contracts and reviews

In New York City the Home Improvement Contractor license names driveways, sidewalks and patios among the work it covers on residential property. The state Attorney General lists Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties and the City of Buffalo as other places that license home improvement contractors. The same office tells consumers that work over $500 requires a written contract with dates, a description of the work and materials, the price and a three-business-day right to cancel.

A paving site that shows its license numbers and says how its contracts work answers the customer who has read that advice. Reviews answer the rest. Google requires that they reflect a genuine experience and bars any reward for them, and it says more reviews and positive ratings can help a local ranking. Ask a few weeks after the job, once the customer has driven on it.

SEO for concrete contractors and paving companies

On the website, each surface and each material gets its own page: asphalt driveways, concrete driveways, stamped concrete, patios, sidewalks, foundations, parking lots, whichever of them you do. A page explains how the job is done, what the base preparation involves, what changes the price and how long before the surface can be used. Finished jobs become short project pages with the size, the material, the town and photos.

Those project pages do the work of area pages honestly. A page for every town with the same text and a new name is what Google’s spam policies call doorway abuse. A page showing three driveways you laid in one town is local content.

Links are gathered from the trade around you: suppliers of stone, asphalt and ready-mix, builders, landscapers and property managers who send you work, local business groups.

Search ads suit a seasonal trade because they can be switched on and off. A campaign can be limited to a radius around your yard or to named towns, scheduled by day and hour, and pointed at a separate page for each service. We start them ahead of the season and pause them when the schedule is full. Our Google Ads management plans start at $500 per cycle.

A concrete contractor’s result

The Corpus Christi Concrete Guys website: the headline Concrete Contractors Corpus Christi, TX and a call button over a photograph of a concrete patio
The Corpus Christi Concrete Guys website.

Corpus Christi Concrete Guys came to us with many of their keywords on the second to fifth pages of Google. We built a plan for content and for backlinks from related concrete contractors in the industry, and did the on-site SEO. The keywords moved into the top five positions within two months. We have worked with them since 2022. The full account is in the Corpus Christi Concrete Guys case study.

That is one contractor in one city, and we do not promise the same timing to anyone. It does show what the work consisted of in this trade: pages that match the searches, on-site SEO, and links from related concrete contractors.

Paving marketing beyond SEO

Paving marketing comes down to pictures and timing, and SEO supplies neither by itself. The pictures live on the website. A driveway customer wants to see twenty finished driveways before reading a word, so the site has to carry large photographs, load quickly on a phone and put the quote form beside them. When the present site cannot, web design is the first job, ahead of any ranking work. The same photographs feed social media, where a neighbor’s new driveway is the best advertisement a paving company gets; our social media marketing page describes the posting and the paid side.

Timing is the job of the Business Profile and the ads. The profile and its reviews, handled under local SEO services, have to be current before the season, since a profile with last year’s photos looks closed. Concrete marketing follows the same pattern with a longer season. Search ads, run under Google Ads management, are the part you can switch on the week the weather turns and off the week the schedule fills. The pricing page shows what has a price today.

What paving marketing should cost to be worth it

Paving and concrete jobs are few and large, so the arithmetic is short. Take what an average driveway or patio leaves you after materials, labor and equipment. Divide the monthly fee by it. Because each job is large, the answer may be a small number. Then ask the harder question: can your crews take the extra work in season? If they cannot, the money is better spent on choosing which jobs you get than on getting more of them, and the pages can be aimed that way.

Questions people ask

Does a paving contractor need SEO or ads first?

Out of season, SEO, the Business Profile and the website, so they are ready when customers start asking for quotes. In season, search ads, because they can be switched on at once and paused when the schedule is full.

What does marketing for a paving company cost?

It depends on the parts you use. The SEO audit is free, Google Ads plans start at $500 per cycle, and there are no contracts. Because one driveway or lot is a large job, compare any price with what a single job leaves you.

What is paving marketing?

It is everything that brings a paving or concrete contractor quote requests from people who do not already know the company: SEO for the map and the ordinary results, a website with a page for each service and photos of finished work, reviews, and Google Ads timed to the season.

When should a paving contractor start SEO?

In the fall or winter before the season you want it for. Google says some changes take several months to show, and customers begin asking for quotes before the weather allows the work.

Can a paving contractor buy Google’s pay-per-lead ads?

Google’s list of Local Services categories for the United States has not included paving, asphalt or concrete flatwork when we have read it, though it has a foundations category. Standard Google search ads are open to you, and they can be limited to your area and your season.

Does SEO work for concrete contractors?

Yes. Our concrete client in Corpus Christi had keywords on pages two to five of Google and saw them reach the top five positions within two months. Results differ by city and by how much competition there is.

How long does it take to see results?

Plan on three to six months. One client’s keywords moved in two, but we do not promise that. Changes to the Google Business Profile and ads show sooner than rankings.

Should I have a page about sidewalk violations?

If you repair sidewalks in New York City, yes. Owners who receive a notice from the Department of Transportation have 75 days to make the repair, and they search for a contractor who understands the notice, the permit and the dismissal inspection.

Do I need photos of my own work?

Yes. Customers choose a paving contractor by looking at finished surfaces, and stock pictures do not answer that. Take three photos of every job: before, during and after, and note the town and the size.

What do you need from me to start?

Access to your website and Google Business Profile, your license numbers, the services and towns you want work in, and your photos.
