Landscaping marketing and SEO for landscapers, lawn care and tree services

Landscaping SEO puts a landscaping company in front of homeowners while they are still deciding who gets the job: the patio planned over the winter, the mowing contract for the year, the tree that came down last night. Some owners call it landscape SEO, others SEO for landscapers. It is the same work, and it is aimed at one result, which is a schedule that is full before the season opens.

We start from one plain fact: landscaping businesses thrive when the schedule stays full, and whether you do patios, pavers, hardscaping, lawn installs or seasonal cleanup, your ideal clients are already searching online. Advernation was started in Queens in 2007 by Christopher Maddaloni, a former electrician. We work for trades, and we count jobs, not clicks.

Tell us which work you want more of, design and build, maintenance or tree work, and which towns. We will show you where you stand for each.

Google’s ads program treats this trade as three. Landscaping professionals design, install and maintain gardens and landscapes. Lawn care professionals maintain lawns, with weed control, mowing and seeding. Tree service professionals plant, remove and maintain trees. Customers search the same three ways, and a company that does all three has to be found for each.

Line of workHow the customer searchesWhat wins it
Design and installation: patios, pavers, hardscaping, plantings, new lawnsPlanned and visual. They look at pictures for weeks and ask two or three companies for a design and a price.A page for each kind of project, built around your own finished jobs.
Lawn care and maintenance: mowing, cleanups, weed control, seedingBefore the season, by town, looking for someone reliable who already works nearby. The map pack, clear service areas and a quote form that takes one minute.
Tree work: pruning, removal, storm cleanupSometimes planned, sometimes urgent after wind or snow.Being on the map and in the ads that night, picking up the phone, and showing proof of insurance.

A common mistake is one services page that lists everything. A homeowner searching for a paver patio and one searching for weekly mowing are different customers, and one page cannot answer both.

A trade that runs on the calendar

Landscaping is seasonal by nature and, in places, by law. In New York State the Nutrient Runoff Law bars applying lawn fertilizer between December 1 and April 1. It also limits phosphorus fertilizer to new lawns or lawns where a soil test shows a need, and keeps fertilizer 20 feet back from a water body unless there is a planted buffer at least 10 feet wide or a spreader with a guard is used. A lawn care company’s year has a legal opening day, and homeowners start looking for a lawn program in the weeks before it.

So the marketing year has to run ahead of the growing year. Design and installation pages should be finished in winter, when the phones are quiet and people are planning patios. In New York, lawn program pages need to be in place well before April 1. Cleanup pages go up before the leaves come down. Google says some changes to a site take effect in hours and others in several months, which is why a landscaper who calls us in May is really planning for next year.

Local SEO for landscaping companies

Maintenance is route work. You want the next customer on a street you already drive, and local SEO lets you choose. Google builds the map pack from three things: how well a Business Profile matches the search, how near the business is to the person searching, and how prominent it is, with reviews and links from other websites counted in. Google also says a local ranking cannot be bought.

On the profile we list each line of work as its own set of services, choose the fewest and most specific categories that describe the business, which is Google’s own rule, and add photos of finished jobs through the season. Your yard or office address stays on the profile. The towns on your routes are added as service areas, up to the 20 Google allows, within about two hours’ drive. Fewer, denser towns usually serve a maintenance company better than a long list.

Licenses, certification and reviews

In New York City, landscaping is named in the list of work that needs a Home Improvement Contractor license from the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, beside patios, driveways, fences and terraces. The state Attorney General lists Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties and the City of Buffalo as other places that license home improvement contractors. Weed and pest control is separate: New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation requires certification to apply any pesticide commercially.

Each of those belongs on your website with its number. A homeowner choosing a lawn program wants to know the person spraying is certified, and Google asks for insurance and, where local law requires it, a license before a landscaping or lawn care company can buy its pay-per-lead ads.

Reviews for a landscaper should be gathered at two moments: the day an installation is finished and the end of a good season of maintenance. Google’s rules apply to both. A review must reflect a genuine experience, nothing may be offered for it, and by Google’s account more reviews and positive ratings can help a local ranking. We set up the request so it goes out by text with a direct link.

SEO for landscaping companies on the website

A stone patio with boulders, a palm and an outdoor kitchen under a pergola

A landscaping website usually has plenty of pictures and almost no words, which gives a search engine little to work with. We keep the pictures and add the words: a page for each kind of project and each service, and for the larger installations a short write-up of the job, with what was built, the materials, the town and how long it took. Those project pages are also the real version of an area page, because they show work in a named place.

What we will not do is print a page for every town with the same paragraph on it. Google’s spam policies describe pages aimed at one city after another that funnel visitors to the same place as doorway abuse.

Links come from the businesses and groups around a landscaper: nurseries and stone yards, builders and pool companies you work beside, associations, the local causes you sponsor. We ask for them and report which ones were gained.

Lawn care was among the first trades Google moved, starting in August 2026, from Local Services Ads into pay-per-lead campaigns in Google Ads. You pay for valid leads, such as calls and messages, not for clicks, and the ads sit at the top of Search and Maps. Google orders them by an auction that weighs the bid, the rating and review count and how quickly the business responds.

Search ads are the tool for timing. They can be switched on for design and installation in late winter, limited to the towns on your routes, and paused the week the schedule fills. Our Google Ads management handles both kinds.

Landscaping marketing beyond SEO

Landscaping marketing is visual, local and early, and SEO covers only part of that. This is the trade where social media does real work. A patio photographed at dusk, or a lawn in June beside the same lawn in March, is seen by neighbors who are not searching for anyone yet, and it is the neighbor’s yard that sells the next job. Our social media marketing page describes how we post and advertise for a business like yours. The website comes next: it has to show projects large, load quickly on a phone and make asking for a quote a one-minute job, and when it does not, web design is the fix.

The Business Profile and reviews, handled under local SEO services, decide who appears on the map in the towns on your routes. Paid search fills the weeks when the schedule has gaps. A landscaping marketing agency should tie these to your calendar: design and build promoted in winter, lawn programs before the first cut, cleanups before the leaves. What has a price today is on the pricing page.

Months two and threeA page for each service and project type. Profile services, categories, photos and service areas set. Listings corrected. Review requests started. The new pages, early reviews, quote requests counted by source.
Before each seasonLawn programs and cleanups pushed ahead of their dates, design and build ahead of planning season, ads switched on and off with your capacity.Requests arriving before the first cut, not after it.
Every monthFinished jobs written up as project pages, links from local and trade sites, review replies. One report: calls, forms, positions, traffic.

From you we need access to the site, the profile and any ad account, your license and certification numbers, photos of finished jobs with the town, and a note each month on which requests became customers.

What landscaping SEO should cost to be worth it

Use two numbers. The first is what an installation job leaves you after materials and labor. The second is what a maintenance customer is worth over a full season, not per visit. Divide the monthly fee by each. A few new maintenance accounts or one installation every month or two may cover it. If the arithmetic needs more work than your crews could take on, spend less or wait, and we will tell you that.

Monthly SEO plans for landscapers start at $999 a month and are quoted after the free audit, with no contract. Get a quote.

A landscaper can test this without much risk. We charge nothing for the SEO audit. Google Ads plans start at $500 per cycle, and because we use no contracts they can be stopped the week your schedule fills. Plans and their prices are on the pricing page.

What we can show a landscaper

We have no published landscaping result, and we will not borrow one. Our case studies cover other trades, among them a concrete contractor who reached the top five positions in two months. For your company the evidence starts with the audit and continues in the monthly report.

Related: SEO for contractors, SEO for paving and concrete contractors if hardscape is most of your work, local SEO services, and the New York SEO company page. The full list of trades is under industries, and two more that meet landscapers on the job are junk removal SEO and remodeling marketing.

Let us make sure your crews have steady work all season. Ask for the free audit now, while there is time before the season.

Questions people ask

What does landscaping marketing include besides SEO?

Social media built on photos of finished work, a website that shows projects and takes quote requests, the Google Business Profile and reviews, and search ads for the weeks when the schedule has gaps. SEO ties them together by bringing the people who are already searching.

When is the right time to market a landscaping company?

Before the season, not during it. Design and build is best promoted in winter, lawn programs before the first cut and cleanups before the leaves fall. Marketing started in May mostly pays off the following year.

What is landscaping SEO?

It is the work of ranking a landscaping, lawn care or tree service company in Google’s map results and ordinary results for the searches local customers make. It is also called landscape SEO or SEO for landscapers. It covers the Business Profile, the website’s pages, reviews and links.

When should a landscaper start SEO?

In the off-season. Pages need time to rank, and Google says some changes take several months. Work started in fall or winter is in place when homeowners begin searching in late winter and early spring.

How long does it take to see results?

Three to six months for organic rankings in most areas, sooner for the Business Profile and for ads. Starting a season ahead matters a great deal in this trade.

Do photos help a landscaping company rank?

Photos help a customer choose you, and Google recommends adding them to your profile. On the website, a photo ranks for little by itself. A project page built around the photos, with the work, the materials and the town written out, gives Google text to match to searches.

Should lawn care and hardscaping be on separate pages?

Yes. They are different customers making different searches. A page for each service, and for each kind of installation, lets every search land on a page that answers it.

Do I need to show a license on my site?

Show every license and certification you hold, with numbers. In New York City landscaping falls under the Home Improvement Contractor license, and applying pesticides commercially requires state certification. Customers and Google both look for them.

Do you work with tree service and lawn care companies too?

Yes. This page covers landscapers, lawn care companies and tree services, because customers and Google treat them as neighbors. Each gets its own pages and its own target searches.

What do you need from me to start?

Access to the website and Google Business Profile, your service list and towns, license and certification numbers, and as many photos of finished work as you have, labeled with the town.
